You know what I hate about Grey’s Anatomy and Cristina Yang’s characterization?
Somehow in 8 seasons Cristina’s world has never expanded much further than Meredith’s relationships (specifically Derek and now Zola), Callie (even though that’s fallen by the wayside), and her own love life. She’s not close to anyone else really. I mean there’s Teddy but we don’t get them being friends with one another (even though I’m sure they like to drink together).
But Meredith has Lexie and Bailey and the Chief and Alex… (I can’t remember who else is on this damn show) Not that she’s besties with everyone but think of how many times Cristina is in the midst of some serious emotional pain and no one even knows her well enough to worry besides Meredith. But when Meredith tanked the clinical trial and kidnapped Zola everyone, literally everyone, came out of the woodwork to cover her ass.
This makes Owen’s betrayal even worse. But it also reminds me that we’ve never met any of Cristina’s friends from before the events of the show and we met her mom once right? And most importantly, while Cristina seems antisocial and selective, she doesn’t seem like she spent her entire life, med school, and graduate school with no close friends. I don’t see that.
It’s just… so annoying.
I totally get that, but I feel like that is part of Yang’s flaws, that’s why she and Meredith are perfect soul-mates. Meredith is like Bailey, a good surgeon, but an even better people person. She brings people together, often against their will. But Christina is different, before Meredith, who basically FORCED her love on her, she only befriended people for what they could do for her career, because that is how she DEFINES herself. We know she wasn’t alone in college, she was very serious with her professor, who still wanted to be with her. And she treats everyone around her like shit, with the exception of Mer, because she feels superior. I don’t, Mer and Yang are my favorite characters, and I think it’s because I relate to Mer, but I like Yang better, I think she is bad ass. She is independent. Also, when she had her mental breakdown after the shooting, people made sure she got her job back, and we see Teddy yell at Owen to make her stay. People care about her, she just doesnt let them close.
